Opposition Lawmakers Rally Behind Ugochinyere as Next House Minority Leader

ABUJA – Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere has emerged as the Minority Leader-designate of the House of Representatives after securing the endorsement of 61 opposition lawmakers across multiple political parties.
Documents obtained by The Whistler revealed that the lawmakers formally nominated the representative of Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State for the position and forwarded their decision to the Speaker of the House for official announcement at the next plenary session.
Ugochinyere’s emergence follows the vacancy created by the defection of former Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Chinda has also emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State.
The lawmakers backing Ugochinyere are drawn from several opposition parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Labour Party (LP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Accord Party.
Sources within the opposition caucus disclosed that the nomination was submitted in accordance with Order 7 Rule 7 of the House Standing Orders.
The caucus is also said to be consulting on other key minority leadership positions, including Deputy Minority Leader and Minority Whip, with one of the positions reportedly zoned to an NDC lawmaker from the North-West.
Explaining their choice, the lawmakers pointed to Ugochinyere’s legislative achievements, noting that he has sponsored and moved more than 40 bills, motions, and petitions within three years in the House. They also highlighted his previous experience as a Senior Adviser to the President of the Senate.
The Speaker is expected to formally announce the new minority leadership structure during the next sitting of the House.
