Former President Goodluck Jonathan has held a closed-door meeting with the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), days after the group controversially announced him as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election without his consent.
The meeting, held on Friday, has fueled fresh speculation about Jonathan’s political future as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
The Turaki-led faction had earlier ratified Jonathan’s nomination in absentia, despite the former president’s refusal to publicly declare whether he intends to contest the presidency.
Although Jonathan has remained silent since the nomination, he previously stated on May 7 that he would consult widely before making any decision on a possible return to the presidential race. The remark came after supporters stormed his Abuja office, urging him to seek another term.
Since then, Jonathan has neither confirmed nor denied his interest in the 2027 contest.
Friday’s meeting with the Turaki-led PDP faction is believed to be part of ongoing consultations ahead of the next general election. However, neither Jonathan nor members of the faction disclosed what was discussed during the meeting.
The development comes amid growing political realignments and heightened speculation over who will emerge as the major contenders in the 2027 presidential election.
