Chaos in Oyo as Residents Protest Kidnapping of Schoolchildren, Teachers — NUT Orders Indefinite Strike

Residents of Oyo State have stormed the streets in anger, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in the Oriire Local Government Area.

The protest follows a directive from the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to begin an indefinite strike effective Monday, June 1.

The industrial action comes more than two weeks after armed men carried out a coordinated attack on May 15, targeting three schools in the Ogbomoso axis. The affected schools include Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School; and L.A. Primary School, Esiele.

During the raid, the attackers reportedly abducted 39 pupils—some as young as two years old—and seven teachers, including Mrs. Rachael Alamu, principal of Community High School, Esiele.
