Imo Assembly urges Uzodimma to direct for procurement, distribution of improved high yielding seedlings to farmers

In view of the motion moved by former Speaker, and Member Representing Obowo State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibeh, the Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to direct the Ministry of Agriculture to immediately source, and procure improved and high yielding seedlings for distribution to farmers in the State.

This according to them is to prepare the state for a bountiful harvest season this year.

The motion which was presented by the Obowo lawmaker on Tuesday was co-sponsored by ten other lawmakers.

Throwing more light on the motion, Ibeh asserted that the raining season is about setting in, and the next line of action will be for farmers to find there way to the farms for planting.

Saying that no seed time, no harvest, the former speaker pointed out that there is need for farmers to be provided with such seedlings as it can improve crop yields and harvest in the state.

“The motion seeks to address hunger, alert all of us in government that seed time has come. If you listen to the cries of people all over the world, you will see that they are all crying about one thing which is hunger and economic recession, which food in security worsens, thereby making living very tough for the citizens.

“But this can be tackled with the deliberate sourcing of high yield seedlings which can improve crop yield and harvest in Imo State, thereby reducing the cost of living and improving the living standards of the people in the State.

“Also, it is the interest and efforts of Governor Hope Uzodimma, through his 3R mantra to ensure that there is sustainable Agricultural development and reduced poverty in the state, and so, it has become pertinent for such to be keyed into in the state, Ibeh averred’.

Supporting the motion, were members representing: Okigwe; Hon. Samuel Ogbunikpa, Nkwerre; Hon. Chisom Ojukwu, Ideato South; Rt. Hon. Johnson Duru Iheonukara, Oru West; Rt. Hon. Dominic Ezerioha, Mbaitoli; Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie, Minority Leader; Rt. Hon. Princewill Amuchie, Isu; Barr. Kingsley Ozurumba, Onuimo; Hon. James Esile, and Ideato North; Hon Okechukwu Udeze.

They commended the mover of the motion, saying that the motion is timely, apt, as it will aid Imo people enjoy bountiful harvest this year, in the future, and curtail the high rate of food insecurity in the nation.

They continued, “This improved seedlings are very vital as they are seedlings that can result to bumper harvest. Also, when these seedlings are given, the farmers should be monitored by NGOs, or the Ministry not to sell them, but to make due use of them.

“The right training should also be done where the Ministry trains the farmers on how to properly plant the seedlings for good results. For this to be actualized, the security personnel should also endeavor to provide security to the farmers when they go to their farms”.

As there was no one against the motion, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe put it to vote and the Ayes had it.

The clerk was also directed to channel the resolution of the house to the appropriate quarters.
