Imo Police Abolish Tiger Base, Unveil New Security Unit

The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has disbanded the Tiger Base Anti-Kidnapping Unit and replaced it with a newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of efforts to improve security and rebuild public confidence in policing across the state.
The new unit was officially inaugurated on Wednesday, May 13, at the Imo State Police Command Headquarters in Owerri, with top security officials and representatives of other agencies in attendance.
Speaking during the launch, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, said the VCRU was created to ensure rapid response to violent crimes while upholding professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights.
Bosso stated that operatives of the unit had been instructed to focus strictly on criminal investigations, avoid involvement in civil matters and shun corruption in all forms.
According to him, the development is part of ongoing police reforms aimed at promoting a transparent and people-friendly policing system in the state.
The police commissioner also inaugurated a Civilian Oversight Board for the unit to enhance transparency, public trust and community participation.
He explained that the board comprises representatives from traditional institutions, religious bodies, the media and the legal profession, and would monitor the activities and community impact of the VCRU.
ACP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa was named Commander of the newly created unit.
Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by his Chief Security Officer, ACP Shabba Gboyako, commended the initiative and urged operatives to remain committed to combating insecurity in the state.
Representatives of the Nigerian Air Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, traditional rulers, civil society groups and the Nigeria Union of Journalists also attended the event.
