PRESS STATEMENT: NANS Zonal Secretary Condemns Abduction of Kebbi Govt Secondary Sch Girls… Calls on Fed Govt to Declare State of Emergency on Affected State,  Nation’s Security Architecture

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone F, strongly condemns the tragic and unacceptable abduction of students of Government Secondary School, Kebbi State. This cruel attack on innocent schoolgirls is not only an assault on their fundamental rights but also a direct challenge to our national values, safety, and future.

As the voice of Nigerian students nationwide, we are deeply pained and outraged that — once again — young learners have become victims of insecurity that should have no place in a civilized society. Schools must be sanctuaries of knowledge, not targets for violence.

We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take decisive and immediate action by declaring a State of Emergency on Kebbi State and on the nation’s security sector, given the repeated failures that have allowed such attacks to persist.

This must include:

1. Swift deployment of specialized rescue and intelligence units to ensure the immediate and safe return of the abducted girls.

2. Overhauling the national security architecture, prioritizing intelligence gathering, community-based security, and coordinated operations across agencies.

3. Enhanced protection for schools, especially in vulnerable regions, in line with the Safe School Initiative.

4. Transparent communication with affected families and the general public to rebuild trust and demonstrate accountability.

NANS Zone F-South East stands firmly with the families of the abducted students and the entire people of Kebbi State during this difficult time. We will not remain silent while the lives and education of Nigerian youths are threatened.

We urge all stakeholders — government at all levels, security agencies, traditional institutions, civil society, and community leaders — to act with urgency, unity, and determination. The safety of our students is non-negotiable.
