In view of the motion moved by the member representing Owerri North State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Kelechi Ofurum, the lawmakers have beckoned on Governor Hope Uzodimma to mandate the State Ministry of Works, Transportation, Environment and other related agencies to urgently commence remedial work on the road that passes through Emekuku, Emii, and Ulakwo in Owerri North Local Government Area.
This they said is to ameliorate the suffering and difficulties faced by the residents of the area and road users, as the dilapidated nature of the road is nothing to write home about.
The motion which was presented before the House on Thursday by the Owerri North Legislator was seconded by Onuimo lawmaker, Hon. James Esile.
The members according to the prayer of the motion, further urged the governor to mandate the aforementioned ministry to capture the rehabilitation of the road in subsequent budgets.
Presenting the motion, Ofurum averred that the road is a major access road that connect two federal roads namely: Owerri-Umuahia road and Owerri-Aba road respectively.
Ofurum continued that it also connects three large communities in Owerri North L.GA. namely: Emekuku, Emii, and Ulakwo respectively.
Vehicles he said run into the gully at intervals, and commuters are forced to take alternative routes which makes them spend more money as taking longer alternative routes to ones destination these days is costly due to the increase in price of fuel.
“The road is in critical condition and under serious threat by erosion and flooding which has caused a major part of the road to collapse and is partly washed away.
“Farmers, school children, elderly people. and other strategic users and commuters that transit goods and services through the road are finding it difticult to ply the road, especially during this rainy season;
“The road has become so dilapidated and is now a security threat to people that ply it as it has drastically increased activities of criminals, armed robbery and even kidnapping on the road. It has further reduced commercial activities as a result of frequent accidents that occur there,’ Ofurum decried’.
He therefore called on the governor to come to there rescue in fixing the road so not just his people but the road users will heave a sigh of relieve.
Supporting the motion were members representing Onuimo; Hon. James Esile, Orlu; Hon. Ikenna Ihezuo, Isu; Hon. Kingsley Emeka Ozurumba.
As there was no one against the motion, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe put it to vote, and Ayes had it.
