Following the motion moved by the Member Representing Isu state Constituency, Hon. Barr. Kingsley Ozurumba, the Imo State House of Assembly has called on the Commissioner of Environment, General Manager ENTRACO, other relevant sanitation agencies to take proactive steps towards engaging and mobilizing Imo people to clear their environments, and avoid obstructing water ways/canals.
This they said is to ensure free flow of flood water as the rainy season is approaching inorder to avoid flooding.
They also invited the aforementioned persons for an interface with the House Committee on Environment to acquaint the House of what their plans are, when and how they intend to go about it.
The motion which was brought before the House on Thursday by the Isu lawmaker, Barr. Ozurumba was seconded by the Mbaitoli legislator, Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie, and co-sponsored by 15 other lawmakers.
Presenting the motion, Ozurumba stated that it has become paramount for Imo people to take seriously ensuring that their environments and their drainage properly cleaned up.
He noted that climate change and it’s challenges has been a consistent issue around the world today, as a result of the issue of inconsistent weather arising from the depletion of the Ozone layer.
This he said has been causing flooding and other extreme weather situation in the world at large.
Saying that it has led to lost of lives and properties, the lawmaker averred, “. It is only proper for the aforementioned bodies to aid our people know what to do to keep themselves safe, which is to keep their environments clean, and unclog their drainages as the rainy season is here.
“Flooding have taken over most houses and many lives, and so It behoves on us to adopt a life styles that will curtail such from reoccurring.
“Governor Hope Uzodimma has put in place facilities; Balloon Technology, and other channels to ensure that the floods are controlled, so it is now Imo people’s responsibility to collaborate and support what the he has done by playing there part which is to ensure that those water canals, drainage are not blocked with debris.
“See what is happening in Lagos, Bayelsa, Port Harcourt, among others. The rainy season is setting in and we cannot stop the challenges the climate changes may pose on the environment but can only put up measures to curtail its life threatening effects, ‘Ozurumba pointed out.
Supporting the motion was the Majority Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, the Deputy Majority Leader, Rt. Hon. Sam Osuji, Nkwerre lawmaker, Hon Chisom Ojukwu, and Ehime Mbano, Hon. Bernard Ozoemena.
They commended the Isu lawmaker for bringing up the motion, saying that it is apt as the rainy season is approaching.
They reiterated the need for the Commissioner for Environment, ENTRACO GM and other agencies to be invited to the house to ensure proper action is taken to keep the people and their properties safe.
As there was no one against the motion, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chyna Iwuanyanwu who presided over the house put the motion to vote and the Ayes had it.
He further directed the Clerk to relate the resolve of the House to the relevant bodies.
