Shock in Katsina as Abducted Retired General Dies Before Rescue Arrives

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while being held captive by bandits, bringing a heartbreaking end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding his abduction.

The government described the incident as a tragic loss to his family, Katsina State, and Nigeria as a whole.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, authorities disclosed that the retired military officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension while still in the custody of his abductors.
“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement noted.
According to the government, efforts by security agencies and state authorities to secure his freedom were ongoing before the unfortunate development occurred.
Reacting to the news, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep sorrow, describing the incident as a dark moment for the state. He said the tragedy underscores the urgent need to intensify the battle against criminal groups threatening lives and security across Katsina and other parts of the country.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure those responsible for the abduction are apprehended and brought to justice.
He also assured residents that the fight against banditry remains a top priority, pledging continued efforts to safeguard lives and property throughout the state.
The government offered prayers for the repose of the late general’s soul and called on citizens to continue supporting security agencies in tackling insecurity.
Major General Abubakar and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, were abducted on May 30, 2026, when suspected armed bandits ambushed their Peugeot 406 near Zakin Baure village in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Their driver survived the attack despite sustaining gunshot injuries.
While the fate of his wife remains a source of concern, the retired officer’s death has added another painful chapter to Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against banditry and kidnapping.
