Former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, has delivered a scathing assessment of the state of Northern Nigeria, declaring the region “totally hopeless” and warning that Nigeria is in a dire condition.
Speaking on Saturday at the third edition of the Late General Hassan Usman Katsina Memorial Conference in Kaduna, Al-Mustapha accused northern political leaders of abandoning the ideals of the region’s founding fathers and failing to provide purposeful leadership.
In a dramatic remark, the former presidential aide said he was prepared to face arrest for speaking candidly about the country’s challenges.
“I wish I may be arrested here because I’ll speak the truth,” he declared.
According to Al-Mustapha, both ordinary citizens and the elite are aware that Nigeria is in a “sorry state,” insisting that the North has fallen into a deeper crisis due to poor leadership and lack of vision.
He criticized northern governors for failing to attend the memorial conference early despite its theme, “From Sacrifice to Strategy,” arguing that it highlighted the qualities current leaders lack.
“They don’t have the thinking, they don’t have the sacrifice, they don’t understand strategy, and they don’t care about the future,” he said, describing the nation’s leadership system as “rotten.”
Al-Mustapha also faulted political officeholders for neglecting the legacy of Nigeria’s founding fathers, contrasting the country’s leadership culture with that of nations where national heroes are highly revered.
He maintained that speaking truth to those in power is the duty of patriots, warning that leaders who surround themselves with praise singers are being deceived rather than helped.
