Hundreds of youths from Imo East Senatorial District have received equipment and starter materials from Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi to enable them launch businesses after completing a skills acquisition programme.
The empowerment and graduation ceremony, held in partnership with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, took place at the NASENI Skills Acquisition Centre in Owerri North LGA, Imo State.
Beneficiaries drawn from across the state were trained in Artificial Intelligence, ICT, fisheries and aquaculture, and phone repairs. They were also issued certificates of completion.
Speaking at the event, Senator Onyewuchi said the initiative was designed to equip constituents, especially young people, with practical skills and tools needed to become economically independent.
“This programme is part of my commitment to create real opportunities for our people to acquire skills that can translate into sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
The NASENI Skills Acquisition Centre, earlier commissioned by Governor Hope Uzodimma, is expected to serve as a hub for youth development, innovation, and job creation in the state.
Uzodimma, during the commissioning, applauded Onyewuchi for bringing the project to Imo and urged beneficiaries to maximize the facility. The centre will also offer training in solar installation, graphic design, printing, and other technical areas.
Chiaka Ndukuba Eke, a participant in the fisheries and aquaculture track, said the training changed her perspective on the business.
She received fish feed, tarpaulin, and iron materials for constructing a fish pond. Fish stock, she said, will be provided later.
“I am very, very happy,” Eke said. “I joined the programme with no experience in fishing, but now I have the knowledge and materials to start.”
Nwoha Johnbosco from Ahiazu Mbaise, who trained in AI and ICT, described the programme as practical and timely.
“We were taught how to design materials, create videos, and use AI tools for assignments. This gives people with little tech background a foundation to grow in the digital space,” he said.
For Ejezie Moses of Ikeduru LGA, trained in phone repairs, the equipment marks the beginning of his business.
“I plan to get a shop and start immediately. This skill will help me earn a living and be independent,” Moses said. He praised Onyewuchi for the intervention, saying it will help reduce poverty and unemployment among youths.
Most beneficiaries thanked the senator for providing free training and expressed optimism that the skills would help them build sustainable businesses and contribute to Imo’s economy.
Project coordinators Mr. Chiaka Alozie and Comrade Ikechukwu Nworgu urged participants to use the starter packs wisely and put their training to practice.
“The goal is for you to become employers, not just employees. Use what you have learned to grow,” they advised.
