Months After Dismissing Illness Rumours, Another Nollywood Star Dies

What began as widespread concern over his health has ended in heartbreaking news: veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru is dead, and his family has finally announced the development.

The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of the celebrated actor at the age of 57.

His family made the announcement in the early hours of Friday through his official Instagram page, disclosing that he died after a brief illness.

The family’s message was brief but emotional.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement read.

“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

The Earlier Health Scare That Got Everyone Talking

The announcement has revived memories of the health controversy that surrounded the actor in June.

At the time, a video showing Duru in a frail condition spread across social media, triggering concerns among fans and colleagues who feared that something serious might be happening to him.

But the actor swiftly pushed back against the reports, releasing an Instagram video in which he described the footage as “fabricated and malicious”.

Months later, the news of his death has brought fresh sadness to those who followed the controversy.

The Movie That Changed Everything

Born in Cameroon on July 27, 1969, to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru eventually moved to Nigeria to pursue his academic and professional ambitions.

He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, earning his degree in 1996.

His acting career began in 1989 when he appeared in Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko.

However, it was his appearance in the 1995 production Rattlesnake, produced by the late Amaka Igwe, that significantly raised his profile.

His portrayal of Ahanna became one of the notable milestones in his journey through the Nigerian film industry.

A Career Marked by Awards and Impact

Duru went on to build a career spanning decades, earning recognition for his performances and contributions to the entertainment industry.

Among his honours was his appointment as a United Nations ambassador of peace in recognition of his positive influence on young people.

In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

Behind the Fame: A Family That Knew Heartbreak

Away from the cameras, Duru was a husband and father.

He married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003, and they had four children together.

But the family endured a painful tragedy in August 2024 when their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, died.

Now, the announcement of the actor’s own passing has added another devastating chapter to the family’s story.

Nollywood Loses Another Veteran

From his early days in the industry to his rise to prominence, Francis Duru remained a familiar face to generations of Nigerian movie lovers.

His death at 57 has closed a significant chapter in his life, leaving fans and colleagues to remember his performances, achievements and contributions to Nollywood.

As the entertainment industry mourns, one question remains on the minds of many fans: how will Nollywood remember a man whose career helped shape its story?

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
