The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as a nationwide “Black Sunday” in memory of victims of terrorism, kidnappings, and other violent attacks across the country.
The association also announced a three-day national prayer programme scheduled to hold from June 12 to June 14 as concerns over insecurity continue to mount.
Speaking after the National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, warned that prayers alone would not be enough to tackle the country’s worsening security situation.
According to him, urgent and practical measures are needed to restore safety and protect citizens across Nigeria.
Okoh called on the Federal Government to immediately declare a state of emergency on insecurity, describing the situation as critical and demanding swift intervention.
He also renewed calls for the establishment of state police and the decentralisation of Nigeria’s security structure to enable quicker and more effective responses to threats.
The CAN president further demanded the unconditional release of all kidnapped victims and urged authorities to ensure justice for those affected by the wave of violence.
More details are expected to emerge.
