The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has made a fresh push for the formal regulation of the country’s fast-growing online media industry, calling on the National Assembly to take legislative action.
The National President of GOMEP-NG, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, made the call in a letter addressed to the leadership of the National Assembly, urging lawmakers to initiate legislation that would establish a legal framework for online media editors and publishers across Nigeria.
Otiti said the proposed Online Media Regulation Act would provide a structured legal and professional framework for practitioners while promoting responsible journalism, ethical standards and accountability within the digital media space.
According to him, the growing influence of online media in shaping public opinion, spreading information and driving national conversations has made it necessary for the sector to operate under an appropriate legislative framework.
He noted that the absence of a dedicated law regulating online media publishers and editors had continued to raise concerns over professionalism, credibility, accountability and the protection of practitioners working in the digital environment.
The GOMEP-NG president therefore appealed to the National Assembly to give the proposal serious consideration, stressing that effective legislation would help strengthen Nigeria’s digital media ecosystem.
Otiti also expressed the guild’s readiness to collaborate with lawmakers, government agencies, media organisations and other stakeholders in developing legislation that would promote professionalism without undermining responsible journalism and freedom of expression.
GOMEP-NG maintained that the enactment of the proposed law would mark a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s online media industry and ensuring that digital journalism continues to play a meaningful role in national development.
