The Imo State House of Assembly has repealed and enacted a Law to end discrimination Against Persons Living with disabilities.
The bill which was sponsored by the member representative Mbaitoli State Constituency, Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie, reads, “A Bill for a Law to Repeal the Imo State Agency for Persons Living with Disabilities (Establishment) Law 2017, and to Enact a Law to Domesticate the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018 in Imo State and for other related matters, was passed recently during the House plenary on Wednesday.
The bill was earlier read the second time and committed to the House Committee on Humanitarian Affairs for other legislative actions on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
According to the report presented before the House, by the committee, “they met, and scrutinized the bill clause by Clause.
“On Friday, May 3, 2024, the committee also conducted a public hearing on the bill, where different agencies and body came and made their input.
“The committee received submission from various stakeholders, considered their inputs and made some amendments on the bill.
“They having thoroughly scrutinized the bill, suggested the amendments, and recommended that the bill be passed into Law.
The committee further appreciated the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe for given them opportunity to serve.
The lawmakers after considering the recommendation of the committee passed the bill into Law.
