Manchester City have been plunged into fresh uncertainty after the club was reportedly found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges relating to alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations.
According to The Athletic, the verdict was delivered on Friday afternoon by a specially selected committee following an 18-month investigation into the allegations against the Premier League champions.
The Premier League had initially brought 115 complaints against Manchester City, covering an alleged period of widespread financial-rule breaches.
Among the allegations were 54 charges relating to the club’s failure to provide accurate financial information between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons.
The lengthy investigation had previously attracted attention after Premier League chairman Richard Masters acknowledged that the process was taking considerably longer than initially anticipated.
Despite the latest ruling, the matter is far from over. Manchester City are expected to appeal the decision, while the punishment, if any, remains to be determined.
Under Rule W.51 of the Premier League handbook, the potential sanctions range from a formal reprimand and financial penalties to points deductions and, in the most serious scenario, expulsion from the Premier League.
One of the most significant aspects of the regulations is that points deductions may potentially be imposed both from the date of the decision and retrospectively.
That raises the possibility of consequences extending beyond Manchester City
