A fresh twist has emerged in the lingering leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a Federal High Court in Abuja delivered a crucial ruling on a suit seeking recognition for the Kabiru Turaki-led interim National Working Committee (NWC).
Justice Salim Ibrahim struck out the case filed by plaintiffs led by PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, who had asked the court to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise and publish the names of the Turaki-led interim leadership.
The court held that the plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to institute the suit and consequently dismissed the matter for want of jurisdiction.
In a ruling that could have far-reaching implications for the party’s internal power struggle, the judge upheld INEC’s preliminary objection and also sustained objections filed by parties seeking to be joined in the case.
Justice Ibrahim further ruled that the plaintiffs failed to prove that INEC had recognised the purported interim NWC or that they were authorised to sue on behalf of the PDP.
The decision marks a significant setback for the Turaki-led faction and adds another layer of intrigue to the battle for control of the opposition party.
More reactions are expected as political stakeholders digest the court’s verdict.
