Notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji has declared that his group is willing to engage in peace talks with the Federal Government but warned that they are equally prepared for armed confrontation if military operations continue.
Turji made the declaration in a Hausa-language video dated June 20, 2026, in which he also claimed responsibility for recent attacks on security operatives in parts of Sokoto and Zamfara states.
In the video, the feared bandit leader said his fighters were open to negotiations if the government opted for dialogue, but stressed that they would not hesitate to respond with force if confronted militarily.
“If the government is ready for negotiation, we are also ready for negotiation. But if they want to continue with force, we are prepared. Our fighters are ready for whatever comes,” he said.
Turji further insisted that his group would not retreat from armed resistance, declaring, “We are ready for peace, but if they choose war, we are also ready. We will defend ourselves.”
His latest remarks come amid heightened tension following a deadly ambush along the Isa–Bargaja axis in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Suspected terrorists believed to be loyal to Turji reportedly attacked security personnel responding to a distress call.
Sources said an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated during the operation, reportedly killing at least four soldiers. However, military authorities have yet to officially confirm the casualty figures.
The video has sparked fresh concerns over the security situation in the North-West, as authorities continue efforts to curb banditry and restore peace in affected communities.
