A major development in Nigeria’s healthcare sector has emerged from Delta State, where the state’s contributory health insurance programme has reportedly crossed a landmark threshold, attracting commendation from the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG).
GOMEP-NG has praised the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC) for what it described as an impressive expansion of health insurance coverage, positioning Delta State as a potential national model in the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The commendation followed the presentation of the Commission’s Health Insurance Performance Infographic to Vice President Kashim Shettima during the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026.
During the presentation, the DSCHC Director-General/CEO briefed the Vice President on the state’s progress in health insurance enrolment and access to healthcare services.
Vice President Shettima reportedly expressed delight over Delta State’s achievement, while Governor Sheriff Oborevwori watched the presentation with satisfaction.
Over Three Million Residents Enrolled
According to figures presented by the Commission, more than three million Delta residents have been enrolled in the state’s health insurance scheme, representing over 50 per cent of the state’s population.
The Commission described the figure as the highest health insurance coverage recorded by any state in Nigeria.
The milestone has placed fresh attention on Delta State’s approach to healthcare financing and its efforts to make quality healthcare more accessible to residents.
The Commission attributed the achievement largely to Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to the M.O.R.E. Agenda, particularly its focus on strengthening healthcare delivery and ensuring affordable and quality medical services for residents.
GOMEP-NG: ‘A Landmark Achievement’
Reacting to the development, the National President of GOMEP-NG, Comr. Akpovoke Otiti, and the National Secretary, Comr. Clinton Uba, described the feat as a landmark achievement that demonstrates the impact of purposeful leadership and effective policy implementation.
They said the recognition received during the summit further underscored Delta State’s growing role in health insurance administration.
According to them, the development shows that strategic investment in healthcare and sustainable financing can produce measurable improvements in citizens’ access to medical services.
GOMEP-NG urged the DSCHC to maintain the momentum by extending coverage to more vulnerable residents and continuously improving healthcare delivery across the state.
The guild also pledged its continued support for initiatives capable of improving public health, citizens’ welfare and sustainable socio-economic development.
DSCHC Sets Its Sights on More Residents
The Delta State Contributory Health Commission, meanwhile, reaffirmed its commitment to consolidating the gains already recorded.
The Commission said its focus remains on expanding access to healthcare through sustainable health financing while contributing to the development of a healthier, more productive and investment-friendly Delta State.
With more than three million residents reportedly already covered, attention is now turning to how far Delta State can push the figure — and whether other states will be able to match the emerging benchmark.
