Nigerians in Abuja and surrounding areas are facing another increase in petrol prices as several filling stations have raised their pump prices, days after motorists enjoyed a significant reduction.
A market survey on Saturday showed that MRS filling stations backed by Dangote Refinery increased the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from ₦1,210 to ₦1,230 per litre at outlets along Kubwa Expressway, Lugbe Expressway and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
Other major marketers, including NNPCL, Rainoil, Empire Energy and Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company, were selling petrol at prices ranging between ₦1,250 and ₦1,299 per litre.
The latest adjustment represents an increase of ₦20 per litre at MRS stations.
A manager at an MRS outlet, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that the company received instructions from its Lagos headquarters to increase the price.
«“We got the directive to raise our price by ₦20 to ₦1,230 per litre on Friday, but no reason was given,” the manager said.»
The development followed Dangote Refinery’s decision on Friday to increase its petrol gantry price from ₦1,165 to ₦1,185 per litre.
With the latest adjustments, motorists in Abuja and neighbouring areas may now pay between ₦1,230 and ₦1,299 per litre, amid rising international crude oil prices, with Brent crude trading above $94 per barrel.
The increase comes just weeks after filling stations across the country cut petrol prices by at least ₦90 per litre, following an earlier reduction in Dangote Refinery’s gantry price.
The latest reversal is therefore raising fresh concerns among motorists and consumers over the direction of petrol prices in the coming days.
