The national leadership of the Labour Party has appointed a two-time governorship candidate in Imo State, Mazi Excel Ochiama,as the new Chairman of the party in Imo State.
A statement endorsed to that effect by Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha,Interim National Chairman and Secretary, respectively, also named two former commissioners in Imo State, Dr(Mrs)Uche Ejiogu and Barr Nelson Ezerioha,as Secretary and Legal Adviser, respectively, alongside 21 others as members of the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party.
The statement pointed out that the appointment of Mazi Excel Ochiama and others to take charge of the Labour Party in Imo State was in exercise of the powers derived from the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party and in pursuant to the party’s resolution of Friday, July 18,2025, in line with Labour Party’s constitution(as amended). The statement urged the newly appointed SWC in Imo State to regard their appointment as part of sacrifices in the process of rebuilding the Labour Party.
It would be recalled that Mazi Excel Ochiama, the newly appointed Chairman of the Labour Party in Imo State – charismatic and politically savvy – was the erstwhile Deputy Chairman of the party in Imo State during the 2023 General Elections. During that period, though a Deputy Chairman, he was the life wire of the party’s State Working Committee (SWC), and was very popular among party members, who gave him the sobriquet “defacto Chairman,” because of his organizational and leadership capacities, as well as his uncommon ability to swiftly and positively respond to emerging challenges that confronted the party.
During his tenure as Deputy Chairman of the party, he was instrumental to the Labour Party producing one Senator, two Federal House of Representatives members, and a member of the Imo State House of Assembly.
