AIFY Global Chairman, Nwagu Bags Great Achievers Award… Calls for Balanced Media Reporting on Imo State

By Christiana Nnaemeka

Chairman of AIFY Global Aluminum, Engr. Dr. Nwagu Ifeanyi, has urged journalists to uphold ethical standards in their reportage and avoid amplifying negative narratives that misrepresent the true state of affairs in Imo State.

Nwagu gave the advise on Friday after being honoured with the Great Achievers Award for his “numerous contributions to the development and growth of the media and society at large”.

The award was bestowed on him by the National Association of Electronics Media Presenters of Nigeria (NAEMPON).

Speaking, Dr. Nwagwu appreciated the association for finding him worthy for such honor, and assured of not relenting in his support to the advancement of the media.

He stressed that while journalists often work under the directives of their employers, the ethics of the profession demand fairness, accuracy, and responsibility, especially when reporting issues affecting the public.

He decried what he described as persistent “negative narratives” being pushed about Imo State, particularly affecting sectors such as the hospitality industry.

According to him, such reports have created an impression that the state is unsafe, causing some business interests to shift operations to places like Asaba.

“People have been made to think Imo State is a dangerous place. But Imo State is still Imo State; Owerri is still Owerri. You can stay out till midnight, and nothing will happen to you,” he said.

Dr. Nwagwu emphasized that many of the circulating stories do not reflect the reality on ground. He encouraged residents, business operators, and media professionals to speak up about the improvements in security and daily life in the state.

He also noted that the era of the Monday sit-at-home is over in Imo State, saying the state is fully open for business and normal activities.

“We are saying that everyone who has the opportunity should speak up and let the world know that Imo State is a free zone, that things have changed. People must live and continue their businesses. Staying indoors out of fear only makes things worse,” he added.

Dr. Nwagwu called for collective effort in correcting misconceptions, insisting that balanced reporting is crucial for the state’s economic recovery and overall image.
