Lamenting over the high temperature of heat wave in the environment, the Imo State House of Assembly members have invited the Management of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC in the state to come and explain to the House why they do not supply power as should, and acquaint then with the way forward.
They also urged the Governor Hope Uzodinma to direct the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Information to collaborate and sensitize the Public on how to tackle the heat, how to detect signs of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and measures to take to avoid casualties.
The Assembly also sort for the governor to direct the Ministries in charge of Agriculture and Environment and all other relevant Agencies to embark on massive tree planting exercises as a long term measure for the purpose of combating heat and having an eco friendly environment.
This ensued from the motion moved by the Mbaitoli representative, Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie on Wednesday, and was seconded by the Majority Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi.
Speaking on the motion, the Mbaitoli lawmaker averred, “the residents of Imo State have been experiencing extreme heat due to climate change and this has made people uncomfortable to the extent of affecting their jobs at their various places of business especially with the lack of electricity supply.
“The elderly people and children are often the most vulnerable under such condition and would be exposed to heat induced medical conditions such as high temperature, heat stroke, exhaustion etc, therefore, there is need to bring some sort of succor to the populace as such a time as this.
“The condition will be ameliorated if EEDC’s supply of Electricity is optimal in which the case of heat wave may be better managed as people will be able to make use of cooling devices and appliances available to them.
“But the reverse is the case as Imo State is almost always in darkness and this has led to massive destruction of refrigerated food items and other perishable foods, meanwhile there is no reasonable information emanating from EEDC as to reason for this perennial black out.
“So there is need to invite the management of EEDC to have an interface with the members to explain the blackout,’Ikpamezie stated’.
The motion was supported by members representing – Ezinihitte; Hon. Henry Agbasonu, Onuimo; Hon. James Esile, Oru West; Rt. Hon. Dominic Ezerioha, Isiala Mbano; Hon. Sam Osuji, Majority Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, and Minority leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Princewill Amuchie.
They all decried the high rate of heat in the environment, and how they waste money on petroleum products.
They therefore reiterated the need for EEDC to be invited to the House, saying that an extent of power supply will help cushion the effect of the heat.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe after the Ayes had it, thereafter instructed the Chairman House Committee on Power, Amuchie to write the Management of EEDC inviting them for an interface with the House.
