A member of the House of Representatives representing Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu, popularly known as Zannan Bungudu, has stirred controversy after urging residents to withdraw their savings and purchase weapons to defend themselves against relentless bandit attacks.
The lawmaker made the call during an interview with DCL Hausa while reacting to the recent abduction of Bungudu Local Government Chairman, Nura Abdullahi, and the killing of four members of his security team.
According to Zubairu, communities can no longer rely solely on government protection and should pool resources to acquire weapons for self-defence.
He acknowledged that such a move contradicts the Constitution but argued that the continued massacre and kidnapping of innocent citizens had left people with difficult choices.
Despite his remarks, the lawmaker maintained that President Bola Tinubu and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal were making efforts to tackle insecurity, stressing that residents must also play a role in protecting their communities.
Zubairu argued that bandits are fewer in number than the communities they terrorise, saying their major advantage is access to superior weapons. He further suggested that any weapons acquired by communities could be registered with relevant security authorities for accountability.
His comments came barely 24 hours after heavily armed bandits stormed the residence of Bungudu Local Government Chairman, Nura Abdullahi, killing two police officers and two local vigilantes before abducting the chairman, his wife, children, and other family members into the forest.
