The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh warning to Nigerian travellers, urging them to strictly comply with the conditions attached to their visas or risk losing future opportunities to travel, study, or work in the US.
The advisory was shared on the mission’s official X account as part of its #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign, emphasizing that visa holders must not exceed the period approved by US immigration authorities.
According to the mission, obeying US immigration laws is crucial for Nigerians who wish to keep their future travel prospects intact.
“Staying compliant with U.S. immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do; it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travelers,” the mission stated.
The embassy further advised visitors, students, and workers to ensure their travel documents remain valid, comply with all visa conditions, and avoid actions that could jeopardize future applications.
“Whether you’re studying, working, or visiting the United States, always honour the terms of your visa. Follow the rules. Stay only for as long as you are authorized. Keep your documents updated,” the post added.
The warning comes amid stricter visa policies and heightened scrutiny of Nigerian applicants by US authorities over concerns about visa overstays.
In recent months, Washington has introduced tougher measures affecting Nigerian travellers, including tighter screening procedures, restrictions on some visa categories, and additional vetting requirements such as the disclosure of social media usernames.
The US government has also shortened the validity period of most non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerians.
The mission maintained that compliance with immigration regulations helps preserve the integrity of the visa system and supports legitimate travel between Nigeria and the United States.
It added that Nigerians who respect the process contribute to keeping opportunities open for students, workers, and visitors seeking access to the US.
“When you respect the process, everyone wins,” the mission said.
