Afrobeats star, Simi, has opened up about the health challenges she faced while working on her latest single, ‘Where You Dey,’ featuring singer Chike.
Taking to her X account, the singer revealed that she had intended to release the song last year but was forced to postpone it due to illness and emotional exhaustion.
According to Simi, although she was excited about the project, the period was physically demanding and mentally draining.
“I really, really wanted to drop this song last year. When I first shared the snippet, I was so excited, but finishing it became difficult because everything felt like a blur,” she wrote.
The singer disclosed that she battled sickness, weakness, fatigue and nausea while pushing through the creative process, even during the recording of the snippet video.
“I was sick, weak, nauseous and tired. My body just wouldn’t cooperate. Even in the snippet video, I wasn’t feeling great. I was just trying my best,” she added.
Simi also praised Chike’s professionalism, saying his input on the song went beyond her expectations.
“I adore Chike’s voice and knew he had to be on the song. When I asked him for a verse, he was ready immediately. As soon as he returned to town, he came to my studio the next day. I respect him a lot,” she said.
She noted that Chike was unaware of her condition at the time, adding that watching the studio footage later shocked her because she wondered how she found the strength to record.
Beyond recording, Simi said she struggled with mixing and mastering the song and eventually chose to master it herself despite disliking the process.
“When the song was done, I still struggled with mixing it. I even mastered it myself — and I hate mastering, so I don’t know what I was thinking,” she wrote.
The singer admitted she was disappointed about missing her release timeline and being unable to promote the track fully.
“People loved the song and kept asking for it, but I didn’t have the energy to create content. I’m a little sad I couldn’t give it the push it deserved,” she said.
However, Simi encouraged fans to receive the song with understanding, describing it as a project born out of love, strength and resilience.
