Why IGP Disu’s New Social Media Order Has Police Officers on Alert Nationwide

IGP Disu Cracks Down on Unauthorized Social Media Use by Police Officers
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has issued a fresh directive barring officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from engaging in unauthorized social media activities that could damage the image, integrity, and professionalism of the Force.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okonkon Edem Iniedu, the directive was prompted by growing concerns over the increasing number of officers creating videos, hosting live sessions, and posting content online while in uniform or in situations that clearly identify them as members of the Force without official approval.
The IGP stressed that although social media remains an important tool for communication and public engagement, officers must use such platforms in line with existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
Under the new directive, officers are prohibited from posting unauthorized content while in uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, revealing sensitive operational information, or using their positions for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes.
To enforce compliance, Commissioners of Police, Commanders, Heads of Departments, and other supervisory officers have been directed to immediately educate personnel under their command and ensure strict adherence to the guidelines. Supervisors will also be held accountable for any violations that occur under their watch.
The Inspector-General further tasked the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) with intensifying surveillance of social media platforms to identify and sanction officers whose online activities fall short of the Force’s professional standards.
The police leadership reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, while assuring Nigerians of its determination to uphold public trust and institutional integrity.
