Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has sparked concern after declaring that he might not even be alive to contest the next general election, citing what he described as persistent intimidation and deliberate efforts to frustrate his activities.
Speaking during an interview on With Chude, hosted by media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, Obi painted a troubling picture of life as an opposition figure in Nigeria, alleging that both his personal and business interests are being systematically targeted.
When asked if Nigerians should expect to see him on the ballot in 2027, Obi gave a startling response.
“Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive,” he said.
Although he stopped short of making a direct accusation against any individual or institution, the former Labour Party presidential candidate maintained that he experiences constant obstacles that he believes are not accidental.
According to him, the alleged pressure extends beyond his person, claiming that opposition voices across the country are facing similar treatment.
“They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally,” Obi stated, adding that he has been denied benefits and privileges ordinarily available to him.
To support his claims, Obi recounted an incident at an airport where officials allegedly singled out his vehicle for restriction while other vehicles were left untouched. He said attempts to identify himself to the authorities yielded no positive response.
The former governor further revealed that some associates and supporters now avoid being publicly linked to him out of fear of possible repercussions.
According to Obi, some well-wishers have gone as far as inviting him to family celebrations while privately pleading with him not to attend.
“I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come,’” he disclosed.
The remarks have since generated widespread reactions, adding a new dimension to discussions surrounding the political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
